Illovo Sugar Company
ZAMBIA SUGAR plc is the largest cane sugar producer in Africa. The company is listed on the Lusaka Stock Exchange with 75% of shares held by the Illovo Group and the balance by investors.
The Nakambala agricultural and factory operations are based at Mazabuka in the southwest of the country with our corporate office in Lusaka.
Nakambala boasts the largest capacity factory in the Illovo group; with the capacity to produce 450 000 tons of raw, brown, and refined sugar from cane supplied by our own operations. In total we produce approximately 1.9 million tons of sugar, with 1.5 million tons delivered to the factory by our small to large-scale growers yearly.
As the country’s leading sugar producer our wide range of sugar products under the Whitespoon brand name include, Vitamin-A enriched direct consumption sugar, raw sugar for industrial customers, syrup and speciality sugars for both local and export markets.
Consistently delivering quality products through a well-developed local distribution network and depot system ensures that Whitespoon products stir up happiness, anywhere and everywhere in Zambia!
We are committed to a healthy and safe work environment with ongoing development and equal empowerment opportunities for all employees. Partnering with local farmers, transporters, contractors and enterprises in the supply chain, brings about multiplied socio-economic benefits to our thriving African community.
Education has become a cornerstone activity of our community involvement as-well as providing healthcare to employees and communities where no other medical facilities exist.
We are driven by initiatives to sustainably secure cane supply. Our water stewardship strategy focuses on ways to reuse water, return it to source, and to minimise its losses. Existing cane lands and farming activities are managed to ensure sustainable agricultural production.
By reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the use of bio-renewable energy such as bagasse and biomass, electricity co-generation at the Nakambala factory provides sufficient power for all agriculture and factory operations, as well as for residential use.
Not only do our sustainable practices make good business sense, they also reflect our integrity, accountability and commitment to the environment and our community.

Everard Read Gallery
In 2009, the CIRCA building was developed alongside the gallery. CIRCA, which is supported by Rand Merchant Bank, has been internationally recognised as an outstanding contribution to South African architecture. Within the subtle curved walls of CIRCA, a series of profound and powerful exhibitions have already been held. The curatorial directors seek to intersperse contemporary art exhibitions with human technology and scientific installations. The magnificent Darwin Room at the apex of CIRCA is used for workshops and lectures. Please note: Our website is also used as an historical archive to reflect the trajectory of our artists’ work as a resource to historians, journalists, students and art enthusiasts. As a result it is important to note that the majority of works on our website are historical and may no longer be available to purchase. Please email gallery@everard.co.za to secure an up to date portfolio of available works by the artists whose work you have admired.
